This sweet was known as New Year's sweet during the reign of "He An" in the years 749 to 1185 AD. In the 10th century, various types of mochi were used for religious gods in Shinito religious ceremonies as offerings to these gods.

This seemingly simple gift is a symbol of auspiciousness and sanctity, and for many years, it was considered a court food belonging to the wealthy class of Japan.
